Day 43 7.9.2011 – The tunnel and the end of the mountains - Distance Travelled: 3458km

Milford Sound →Invercargill

Hello all,

Today we drove down from Milford Sound all the way to the bottom of the South Island and Invercargill. Again we had to face the hand mined Homer Tunnel but going up it this time! It is always an experience when you are driving up in the dark and you can’t see then end, you just think you are going to continue up to the top of the mountain!!!

We took the coast road instead of the highway, as they are always more scenic (even though the highways are also really nice to drive along). We eventually got to the bottom of the Island where the Southern Alps petered out to some smaller hills out into the ocean. It was odd seeing this as I knew by then that we had driven then entire range from start to finish, all (roughly) 550km of them!

Driving along the wild coast was just as fun as the West coast, then we reach the edge of Invercargill and our camp for the night.

This is me signing off...J
